I love Google – I can’t live without it – its magical algorithm and easy-to-use interface and layout. I’ve tried to use Bing for a week solid – just to see what it was about – and I’ve tried Yahoo (and didn’t enjoy the experience at all). Both times I found myself heading back to the safe walls of Google within a couple of days.
Perhaps it’s just the familiarity that has me hooked, but I digress… I wanted to talk about the other side to Google, as there is (some would say ‘of course’) a negative side to Google, too. While, more often than not, this is the case with any company, it’s all the more prominent with the big ‘G’.
Why I’m starting to worry
So what is there to dislike about our beloved search engine? For me it’s only really been in the last year that I’ve called into question my devotion to Google. And it seems so many things have happened between then and now.
The most recent of which has been an interesting article over at VentureBeat where they discuss how for every new product Google releases there are always other companies that suffer. Google Maps? What about TomTom, Garmin and the like that offer the same services, but not for free. Or simply, what about the dozens of other small search contenders that offer a niche search experience?
We’ve talked in the past about alternatives to Google, but these fall by the way side as soon as Google integrate a similar service into their engine. There is no finer example than the recent up-to-the-minute tweet inclusion to Google – so long specialist Twitter search sites.
Google vs Amazon
Another huge debate during 2009 has been Google’s fight with the book industry. While trying to digitalise the world’s written word they have angered a fair few people, including Internet giant Amazon. I happen to think it’s a great idea to digitalise books – but then I don’t make money from selling books, so I lack their perspective.
There’s even a whole country that doesn’t love Google: China. Censorship began in 2006 and has been a strong topic since. It doesn’t help that Google pride themselves on their freedom of speech and by censoring themselves are being a little hypocritical. Despite this, Google are the least censored search engine in China.
Privacy issues…
The last, and perhaps biggest, negative I want to mention is always in hot debate. Privacy. The never-ending discussions on Google’s huge amount of knowledge, well, never end… If, like me, you have a Gmail account, Adwords account, search with Google, share your photos with Picasa, and use GoogleDocs, then chances are Google know a fair bit about you.
Personally, I have very few problems with them knowing my information – at least until they share my personal details with someone else.
I guess there will always be losers
So it’s easy to see there are losers in Google’s battle for supremacy, but then perhaps that’s just business? It’s just a shame that we’ve seen, and are going to see, plenty of very useful sites disappear over time, many of which were far more valuable than Google’s version of their services.
Conversely, products often fall by the wayside simply due to people’s inability to adapt. I suppose I should really give Bing another try…

Hundreds of years ago, Shakespeare said: to be or not to be, this is a question. And now there are no other phrases that could perfectly describe the situation of Google in China: to leave or not to leave, this is a question.
Yesterday, David Drummond, SVP, Corporate Development and chief legal officer of Google published a post named “A new approach to China” on Google’s official website; the following is part of the post:
“We launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results. At the time we made clear that we will carefully monitor conditions in China, including new laws and other restrictions on our services. If we determine that we are unable to achieve the objectives outlined we will not hesitate to reconsider our approach to China.”
According to the post, this decision was made after an investigation found that the company had been hit with major cyber attacks which are believed originated from China. It is also said that Google suffered a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on its corporate infrastructure originating from China in mid-December, which resulted in the theft of intellectual property.
As the giant internet search engine, Google has provided its services and free information worldwide. While in China, Google compromises to censor some of its searching results due to the agreement with Chinese government. However, the fact is that tensions between goggle and the Chinese government still exist.
Human-rights advocates endorsed Google’s statement. The company’s decision ’spotlights the importance of freedom of expression and privacy online,’ Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
As is known to all, since China joined WTO, it shows its huge potential as well as provides a large market. To withdraw from China means to abandon a great amount of fortune and opportunity, as the same time support the human right and freedom. But, would this action affect its relationship with Chinese government?
It is the right time for Google to ask itself: to leave or not to leave, this is a question.

With so many people having websites nowadays, it’s no surprise that so many are wondering how to improve their Google rankings. While this can be a somewhat complicated subject because Google frequently changes its methods and formulas for determining its rankings; it’s actually not as difficult as you think.
The two main ways to increase it is to create more backlinks or increase your page rank. This is because these are two major factors that determine how relevant a website is.
Before we look at page rank and backlinks though, we need to make sure that your website is relevant for the keyword that you’re kind of right for. You want the keyword that you are trying to rank to be in the title of your web page, as well as every hundred order so words. You do not for any reason want your keyword to appear more than every 50 words, because the search engines will decide that you are stuffing your content of keywords and will not indexed your site.
Lastly, if at all possible you want to create an anchor text link within your web page that is your keyword. By doing these simple things, you can ensure the search engines will rank your particular keyword high.
The reason that we did that first is because no amount of backlinks will help you if the search engines don’t rank you. Think of it almost like a pyramid: relevancy is the bottom of the period, then backlinks, and then page rank. By completing all these different levels, you ensure that your page will be ranked well in Google. So, now that we have a foundation of relevancy built, we can move on to getting backlinks.
There are dozens of ways to get backlinks, and almost all of them are very tedious. You can do pretty much anything you want, from forum posts, to posting some blogs, to publishing articles. Whichever method you decide to choose, stick with it! Most people fail because they try to spread themselves to thin and get overwhelmed. It’s much better to do to 40 forum posts each day than to do one form post, one blog comment, and one article each day. Remember, when it comes to the backlinks the more the better. So choose a method, and start doing it!
The last thing that you can do to improve your Google rank is to raise the page rank of your website. The best way to do this is to get backlinks from other web sites that already have a high page rank. Personally, I think that the two easiest ways to do this are creating blogs and publishing articles, but there are other methods. For example, you can search for your keyword and see who the top listed result is, then try to publish an article on their site with a leap back to your own. While this may seem easy because you live through one article, convincing in them to publish it can be quite difficult.
If you follow these steps and build a good solid web page, you should improve your Google rank in no time!

Having an internet home business of your own means you get to work online whenever you want and do it somewhere in your home. There are many ways to go about this, but one way many internet business owners make money is to promote the Google Adsense affiliate program.
You do not have to surf around very long to find Google ads on somebody’s website. As a matter of fact it seems like the market is flooded. This brings up a very good question of whether Google Adsense still offers a good internet home business opportunity today. Let’s address that question briefly in this article.
1. Promoting Google Adsense only requires someone click the ad and you get a commission. These types of programs are the easiest way to make money online because they do not require much effort from your visitors.
Other forms of internet income require a person to complete the form, or actually pull out their credit card to purchase something. For this reason Google Adsense still offers an excellent way to make money online.
2. Google is by far the most popular search engine in the world which makes its pay per click program the best one there is. Actually it is absolutely possible to make it even a full-time income if you are determined to do so.
This can be done because of the huge amount of visitors that Google gets and the amount of people who are trying to find those visitors using Google advertising.
3. Google offers excellent integration tools to make it possible for you to quickly put ads on your website or blog. Google owns Blogger.com and you can place ads on your own blog doing nothing more than dragging them in into place.
4. It is possible to concentrate on only one specific niche with your business or you can create multiple websites or blogs in variation of different niches. Many online entrepreneurs use several websites because it is always wise to have some backups if one website is not making any money for one reason or other.
Either way you can earn anywhere from a few extra dollars a month to a six figure income. You do this simply by having more ads available on more pages where people can find it.
5. When starting to promote Google Adsense ads you have an access to excellent training that Google offers. Even though, it is not complicated to use Google Adsense, you should get familiarize with the tutorials they have to offer.
In summary, yes Google Adsense is still a good internet home business to be in. You can make it a part of multiple streams of internet income or choose to focus entirely on it to make money online.

Google has reached an agreement with the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers (AAP), which represented a broad class of authors and publishers to expand online access to in-copyright books and other written materials in the U.S. The publications will come from the library collections participating in Google Book Search.
The agreement was reached after two years of negotiations. The deal includes Google dishing out $125 million to establish the Book Rights Registry, which would resolve an existing class action lawsuit brought by the groups.
If the court approves, the agreement allows:
* More Access to Out-of-Print Books — Generating greater exposure for millions of in-copyright works, including hard-to-find out-of-print books, by enabling readers in the U.S. to search these works and preview them online
* Additional Ways to Purchase Copyrighted Books — Building off publishers’ and authors’ current efforts and further expanding the electronic market for copyrighted books in the U.S., by offering users the ability to purchase online access to many in-copyright books
* Institutional Subscriptions to Millions of Books Online –Offering a means for U.S. colleges, universities and other organizations to obtain subscriptions for online access to collections from some of the world’s most renowned libraries
* Free Access From U.S. Libraries — Providing free, full-text, online viewing of millions of out-of-print books at designated computers in U.S. public and university libraries
* Compensation to Authors and Publishers and Control Over Access to Their Works — Distributing payments earned from online access provided by Google and, prospectively, from similar programs that may be established by other providers, through a newly created independent, not-for-profit Book Rights Registry that will also locate rightsholders, collect and maintain accurate rightsholder information, and provide a way for rightsholders to request inclusion in or exclusion from the project.
“Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Today, together with the authors, publishers, and libraries, we have been able to make a great leap in this endeavor,” said Sergey Brin, co-founder & president of technology at Google. “While this agreement is a real win-win for all of us, the real victors are all the readers. The tremendous wealth of knowledge that lies within the books of the world will now be at their
fingertips.”

When you are optimizing your website to get a top Google ranking, you have to be patient. Most webmasters are very eager when it comes to optimizing their website for a top Google rank and they go overboard with the use of keywords. If you do this wrongly, not only will you not rank highly on Google and the other search engines, but you may also end up getting banned from their list.
Getting a top rank in Google may be your dream but you need to understand the keyword density for each of your article. The calculation for keyword density is critical. As a rule of thumb the keywords used should not be more than 5 % of your article. This to me makes perfect sense. Imagine reading an article with so many of the same words being repeated. It turns the readers off and is not good for your marketing. A naturally written article attracts more readers who would likely read to the end of the article before they decide to buy whatever it is that you are selling.
There are many tools that you can use to assist you in getting a top Google rank. Without a doubt, the most essential of all is Google Keyword Tool, a free web-based tool to help you find the right keywords and the number of searches made for that keyword in a 12 month period so that you can use the information to optimize your articles for a top rank in Google. There are also several paid keyword software tools that you can purchase but I find the free Google Keyword Tool is a great tool to start with before you progress to other multiple use software tools.
Original and informative content is what Google and the other search engines value highly. Why would they want to publish something that has already been written by someone before. The search engines are providing a service to the mass public on finding information and the more original and informative your information is with the right amount of targeted keywords, the higher is your chances of getting a top rank in Google.
Besides articles and information, your website has got to look like a normal website and not a sales page with just good copywriting. A normal website has the “about me” page, your contact details, privacy statement, categories, and pages. The more pages you have with the right keyword density, the more the search engines will love your website because they love content. The search spiders eat your content and will push you up the Google ranking if they love eating what you have to offer.
Once the spiders have crawled and you are listed by the search engines, you will need to optimize your site even further. Usually, you won’t rank on Google’s first page on the first crawl. Fine tune your articles with keyword density and build backlinks to your website. Backlinks that point back to your website are extremely valuable because it shows that your website is popular. You can build backlinks by marketing articles with your hyperlink in the resource box, joining forum sites and doing some social bookmarking on popular platforms such as Facebook, Digg and Twitter.
